Garage door questions Milwaukee

Springs

How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?

Common signs: a loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the spring above the door, a door that feels very heavy, or an opener that runs but the door only lifts a few inches.

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

We strongly recommend against it. Springs hold a large amount of tension and can cause serious injuries. Call a trained technician.

Should both springs be replaced at the same time?

Usually, yes. Both springs were installed at the same time and have the same wear, so when one breaks the other is often close behind.

How long do springs last?

Standard springs are rated for around 10,000 cycles – about 7 to 10 years for most families. High-cycle springs last much longer. More on our spring repair page.

Openers

Why does my garage door reverse before it closes?

Usually the safety sensors near the floor are blocked, dirty or out of alignment. Clean the lenses and make sure both lights are on. If it still reverses, call us.

My opener runs but the door doesn’t move. What’s wrong?

The door may be disconnected from the opener (check the red emergency cord), the opener gear may be stripped, or a spring may be broken.

Should I repair or replace my opener?

If it’s fairly new, repair. If it’s old, has no safety sensors, or keeps breaking, replacing it is often the better choice. See opener repair.

Which opener is the quietest?

Belt drive openers and wall-mount (jackshaft) openers are the quietest options.

New Garage Doors

Is an insulated garage door worth it?

In Wisconsin, usually yes – especially for attached garages. Insulated doors are warmer, quieter and stronger.

Can you install a door in a non-standard opening?

Yes. Many older Milwaukee garages have non-standard sizes. We measure carefully and offer doors that fit. See new garage doors.

Maintenance

How often should a garage door be serviced?

Once a year for most homes. Commercial doors may need more frequent service. See garage door maintenance.

What lubricant should I use?

A silicone or lithium-based garage door lubricant. Avoid WD-40 and heavy grease.

My door is frozen to the ground. What should I do?

Don’t keep running the opener. Disconnect it with the red cord and gently free the seal with a plastic scraper or warm air. If the door still won’t move, call us.

Commercial Doors

Do you repair commercial and industrial doors?

Yes – overhead doors, roll-up doors, loading dock doors, security gates and commercial operators. See commercial garage door repair.

Do you offer maintenance plans for businesses?

Yes, we can schedule regular maintenance based on how often your doors are used.
